Book Salon with Michael Busch – 10 | Nandita Sharma

The Polis Project is excited to welcome Nandita Sharma, professor of sociology at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, to our Virtual Book Salon. On Thursday, October 15, she will join us to discuss her excellent new book, Home Rule: National Sovereignty and the Separation of Natives and Migrants (Duke University Press). The book examines the historical construction of “Natives” and “Migrants” in the political imagination across time and place, from the nineteenth century to the postcolonial new world order of contemporary nation-states. Along the way, Sharma shows the ways in which Migrants have come to be increasingly marginalized and persecuted as nationalist sentiments intensify, and as governments escalate policies of exclusion, exploitation and control.
